The Ipad and how it is affecting university wifi networks.

It is interesting to see the different receptions that the Ipad has received in universities and institutions. Most universities are open to students having the device and even Seton Hill has promised to give each incoming freshman one of their own. Princeton University, however, has had problems with the iPad using the school's network.

When a normal device wants to access a public server it asks to borrow an IP address, and it must renew that IP address every few hours. The problem that Princeton University is having is that Ipads do not ask to renew the borrowed IP address. This leads to the network giving another device that same I address that the Ipad is using. So its kind of like someone borrowing a book from the library and then the library thinks the book has been returned so it "lends" it out to someone else who never actually gets it. It is entirely possible that network administrators for the Universities who have trouble with the IPad would like to take a baseball bat to it.

More detailed reports on the iPad bans can be found at:

It is not clear as of today how many Ipad’s are being utilized at Towson University. Perhaps there are not enough to create any sort of problem yet; but it is more likely that no problems will surface because of Towson’s ability to support the Iphone and Itouch.
